The first problem of the Xmgrace symbol numbering was fixed in relax 2.1.1.

* Bug fix for the creation of 2D graphs via grace.write for when many data
sets exist. The algorithm for setting the Grace symbol number to be between 1
and 10 was broken!
As for the MAX_TICKS message, this is a standard feature of Xmgrace to prevent
too many axis ticks from being shown. You can see in the generic_fns/grace.py
file that relax only controls the properties of the ticks, not how many a
graph will have, so this message is out of relax's control.
